The End of the Golf Equipment Industry?

The number of companies that thrive in the golf equipment industry could be counted on your fingers (even if you are missing a couple!) This space is basically dominated by a couple of big names like Ping, Callaway, Nike golf and Taylormade. These companies are the ones you find in big box stores as well as advertised through the various professional tours.

It might be one of the most recognizable logs in the world, but even they are losing money making golf clubs

Of course, there are plenty of others out there, but they aren’t part of the big hitters in golf. Even someone like Wilson, one of the biggest companies in sports, doesn’t rely on golf to make a living.

James Pickard about to get a hole in one!

The world of youtube golf is big and getting bigger all the time. There are some fantastic instruction videos, tips, news and reviews. However, when I tune in to the internet, my favourite viewing is without doubt a course vlog and James Pickard one of the people I enjoy watching the most.

There is a lot of good content to choose from, but anything on the Buzzagolf channel is always great and James is a channel regular.

From his opinions on this year’s Majors to Rory’s putting woes as well as everything from his thoughts on the rule book and losing to Mark Crossfield (!) , James was great value in this interview. He is one of the friendliest guys you could hope to chat with and was happy to tell me about his future projects online.

Swing Speed and Distance:How Far do You Hit Your Clubs?

swing speed and distance
Trackman is a great way to capture data from the swing

Distance, especially with the driver, is one of the driving forces in the golf market. Clubs are sold on the distance they generate. Check out the ads for any recent range of clubs and you will find distance placed squarely front and center. In fact, if you want to guarantee that your latest range flops, try selling it as ‘slightly shorter than all the rest’ (then start clearing your desk while you wait!)

The Ultimate Guide to Breaking 80

ultimate guide to breaking 80

It is a well-known fact that the vast majority of internet golfers regularly shoot under par from the tips, need xx-stiff shafts in all their clubs (including the putter!) and are just keeping their game sharp until they get a shot on tour. However, in the real world, this isn’t the case. An oft-cited statistic says that most people who golf won’t break 100, never mind breaking 80. This is probably true if we include those who pick up their clubs once a year at most on a golf day at work. For those of us who play regularly or semi-regularly, we can fix our sites a little higher.

The Net Return will improve your practice time

I am a fairly typical golfer in lots of ways. Although I spend a lot of time researching and writing about golf, I don’t actually get to the course as often as I would like. This means that I love anything that can help me get a bit of practice in at home. I have given a fair bit of thought to putting as I explained here. But how can I improve my full swing without getting to the course? With The Net Return practice net, I think I may actually have found the answer.

How To Practice Putting

good putting makes for better scoring and more enjoyment on the course

You will often hear that a good short game is the key to shaving strokes off your score. Whilst it is true that keeping it in play off the tee and hitting a few more greens will make a difference, holing more putts is always going to make the biggest dent when you look to take a few shots off that card. Just imagine going from 36 putts to 32, for example. There aren’t a lot of areas that will cut four shots in one go.

Kids Should Enjoy Learning the GameIt is a pretty common belief that the sooner you start hitting the little white ball, the better you can potentially become. Everyone knows about Tiger smashing it aged two, right? Of course, for every tour pro who was given his first club before he could walk, there are hundreds who never want to see a golf course again after being taken there daily by pushy parents as kids or being told to swing in front of the mirror every day after school.
